Building FDOT Turn Lane for Gulf Gourmet

Overview
Disciple Contracting designed and built a state-spec turn lane off the interstate serving a commercial property, completing the full roadway section from drainage through finished asphalt under FDOT requirements.
Challenge
The Florida DOT required a turn lane as a condition of the development. The work had to meet strict state specs and, because of its location on an active roadway, much of it had to be performed overnight. An existing roadside ditch also ran through the work area and had to be addressed without compromising its drainage function.
Approach
We relocated and regraded the existing ditch rather than eliminating it, redirecting drainage and running new pipe underneath an existing driveway. The build used roughly 700-800 yards of clay, another 200-300 yards of lime rock for the base, and nearly 500 tons of asphalt. All material was state and engineer-approved.
Because the work sat on a live roadway, crews ran overnight shifts (roughly 8 pm to 6 am) under full lighting, with sheriff’s deputies on site for traffic control per state requirement.
Result
A textbook turn lane with storm drain, demo of existing asphalt, base, and final asphalt, striped and ready per FDOT. This was a demonstration of Disciple Contracting’s ability to deliver finished pavement to state spec, manage overnight roadway work safely, and navigate the approval and documentation layer that comes with public roadway projects.
